05Step 5

Practice it on the hard days.

The Situation

You don't realize the new thought can hold steady even when your skin flares.

A new thought is easy to hold on a good skin day. The work is on the days the old thought wants its job back — the flare, the bad photo, the harsh light. Those are not the days to abandon the practice. They are the days the practice was built for.

Each time the new thought holds through a hard moment, it strengthens. Each time it holds through a worse moment, it strengthens more. This is not pretending. This is choosing, in real time, where your sense of self gets to come from.

The Solution

Practice it most on the hard days — that is when it makes you stronger, and it gets easier to feel good every time.

On a flare day, say the sentence first, before you look. Then look. Then say it again. Do not wait until you 'feel' it. The feeling follows the practice, not the other way around. Notice, over weeks, how much smaller the mirror-drop becomes.
